ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) criteria are no longer the exclusive domain of global financial corporations – they have become a measurable currency in business relationships, particularly in seafood. Modern retail chains and sophisticated HoReCa businesses no longer ask suppliers about a sustainability strategy alone; they ask for hard evidence: MSC/ASC certification and full supply-chain transparency, from catch to distribution centre. This transformation has far-reaching operational implications for the entire Polish processing industry.

The Conscious Consumer Sets the Rules

This evolution is driven by the changing consumer – younger generations and increasingly conscious buyers filter their decisions through the lens of ethics. The blue MSC label (wild-caught) and green ASC label (farmed) are no longer just a mark on packaging; they are a “license to trust”. Retail chains are tightening procurement policies accordingly, and for a seafood producer the lack of proof of sustainable sourcing now means risking a contract to a more transparent competitor.

Traceability: Full Product Traceability

A key element of ESG in the supply chain is traceability – the ability to track a product’s full history. ERP systems integrated with digital fishing logs and blockchain give every batch a unique code. A category manager at a retail chain or a chef at a premium restaurant can then verify in seconds the exact fishing ground or farm of origin, whether fishing quotas were respected and whether any labour abuses occurred at sea. This transparency eliminates costly reputational risk.

Environmental Responsibility at the Processing Plant

The green transformation of seafood does not end with the raw material. Environmental criteria – the “E” in ESG – also reach the plants themselves: leading Polish companies invest millions in closed-loop water systems, on-site wastewater treatment and energy optimisation of freezing. Another step is cutting packaging’s carbon footprint – replacing complex laminates with fully recyclable mono-materials – which shapes negotiating positions on international markets.

ESG as a Growth Driver, Not a Cost

Companies that see ESG only as a regulatory burden will quickly fall behind – sustainability has become a driver of growth and lasting B2B relationships. Where can you find reliable suppliers, how do you implement a sustainable procurement policy across your retail chain or restaurant, and where is the market heading? The answers, and the best business contacts, are waiting at our trade fair.
